When looking through a large collection of video files, it can become difficult to figure out what scenes are contained within each video, especially if they are not named properly. If you don't want to play each video one by one, then you can turn to SceneExplorer and make your life easier. It's essentially a lightweight file explorer, but it works exclusively with videos. Furthermore, not only does it show your videos as large thumbnails, but it displays several thumbnails, with scenes from your videos, which helps you figure out what can be found in each video.

SceneExplorer is offered as a free and open source application, and it works on all modern Windows platforms. Its components are distributed in a 7ZIP archive, and you only need to extract them, without going through an installation process. The software doesn't ask for any special tools or services, and it doesn't use a significant amount of resources.

The user interface consists of several panes, in which you can add folders, view logs and more. Once you import one or more folders, you can select them one by one and pick an option to scan them for videos. Found video files are displayed in the largest part of the interface, as three consecutive thumbnails. You can set the application to show more thumbnails and make other fine adjustments in the general settings menu.

The software captures different stills from the entire video and displays them in order, which makes it easy to tell what scenes can be found in each video. You can also find a wide range of sorting and filtering options, to arrange your files according to your preferences. Furthermore, you can make various tweaks to how the thumbnails are displayed.

SceneExplorer has a simple functionality, but it can definitely come in useful if you need to find a specific video in a huge collection.

Pros

The software shows you multiple thumbnails from the same video file. It lets you scan video folders separately, and you can also use various sorting and filtering tools. Its hardware requirements are modest, and you can have it up and running in no time.

Cons

The application would be more comfortable if it had more visible scanning options, preferably on a toolbar.
